HN has some formatting syntax but not full markdown: https://news.ycombinator.com/formatdoc For your tree I added the newlines back and then used the "text after a blank line that is indented by two or more spaces is reproduced verbatim" feature.

I spent a considerable amount of time trying to figure out what this says in what I assumed was Braille, only to realize it's a badly formatted ASCII Christmas tree. :)
