How many other industries do you know of that people do side projects related to their jobs in addition to working? Do doctors perform surgeries on the side? Lawyers work outside of work for free? Bankers? Teachers?

Every other profession thinks it’s good enough to go to work, come home and live life.

Doctors often volunteer for programs like Doctors Without Borders. Of course there are also many doctors that work 80+ hours per week and there are also those that do research on the side and contribute to the peer review process.

Lawyers in a law firm are just expected to work 80+ hours a week if they want to make senior partner and there are many that do pro bono work.

There are teachers that do side projects like volunteering to run after school programs or contribute to community education programs. Many teachers respond to parent emails outside of teaching hours and grade papers at night.

And this list can go on and on.

The reality is that many software developers are entitled. Some of that comes from extreme naivety because most software developers have absolutely no idea what any other professions looks like. It’s easy to make some bullshit claim about how great or bad something is when you aren’t comparing it to anything else.
